Julie Shiel

Under an exquisite moon,
remotest stars ignite
and the virgin queen awakens,
to hunt alone throughout the night.

Diana, lunar goddess,
of the hunt and of the wood,
wraps the night around her,
catches stars amongst her hood.

She hunts the mighty stag
with her silver bow and arrow,
and when the hunt is over,
she honors bone and marrow.

She bathes under the stars
in the water’s quickened streams,
and no one dares to gaze on her
naked in the silver beams.

And when the moon rides low
in the dawning skies of blue,
the goddess lays aside her bow
and falls asleep among the dew.
